Online multiplayer will play a big role in the sequel to Hogwarts Legacy, according to several job adverts at Warner Bros. Games.

Warner Bros. hasn’t officially revealed a sequel to Hogwarts Legacy, but we know one is on the way thanks to comments from studio executives at the company.

The wizarding role-player, set within the Harry Potter universe, is one of the most successful single-player games of recent memory, having recently topped 40 million copies sold. For a comparison, Elden Ring only topped 30 million units in April this year.

A sequel was always inevitable, and based on several job listings at developer Avalanche Software, the magic might be expanding into the online realm.

A wave of job listings have gone up on the recruitment site for Warner Bros. Games, looking for Senior Software Engineers, Advanced Designers, Advanced Artists, and more.

While the listings don’t mention Hogwarts Legacy 2 explicitly, they all read: ‘Join the team behind the blockbuster open world, action RPG Hogwarts Legacy as we create what’s next!’

It’s safe to assume this is referring to the sequel, unless they’ve got some kind of spin-off cooking as well, but each listing refers to the next project as a ‘new online multiplayer RPG’.

On the job listing for Senior Software Engineer specifically, the duties include ‘design, implement, and maintain scalable and secure backend services, including player data persistence, matchmaking, lobbies, and server infrastructure’.

On another listing for a gameplay-orientated Senior Software Engineer, it reads: ‘Develop and implement key gameplay systems and features, with a focus on building extensible architecture to support online, evolving gameplay in a live environment’.

This all suggests Hogwarts Legacy 2 is going down the live service route to some extent, which might be concerning for anyone who simply enjoyed exploring the castle grounds in the original without being bothered by your fellow man.

While this suggests online will be a key focus, it remains to be seen if these features will be optional or applied to specific areas – such as duelling, Quidditch, or working together to take down trolls (whether the basement or literal variety).

Warner Bros. recent history with multiplayer live service games (Suicide Squad: Kill The Justice League and Gotham Knights) has been varying degrees of awful, so while multiplayer feels like a natural evolution of Hogwarts Legacy, to some extent, the company overall doesn’t have the pedigree to instil any confidence.

The original Hogwarts Legacy, set in the 1890s, is strictly a single-player experience. While it featured duelling and other activities, there was notably no Quidditch. A spin-off dedicated to the fictional sport, titled Harry Potter: Quidditch Champions, was released a year later, but it was quickly forgotten about.
