Singer-songwriter Jenny Lewis, best known as the lead singer for Rilo Kiley, just celebrated her birthday with her dog.
The ceremony, shared across social media, saw Lewis ceremonially (if not legally) marry her cockapoo, Bobby Rhubarb, in an event that blurred the lines between performance art, party, and ritual.
Dressed in a white wedding gown, Lewis leaned fully into the occasion, describing it afterwards with characteristic deadpan joy: ‘I married my dog for my 50th birthday… BLESS!’
Bobby Rhubarb isn’t a new addition to Lewis’s world.
The dog already has a place in her songwriting mythology, having inspired the 2021 track Puppy and a Truck, a tender ode.
The wedding itself doubled as an intimate musical showcase. Lewis performed alongside longtime collaborator Ben Gibbard, delivering a rendition of Such Great Heights from their joint project The Postal Service.
She also teamed up with Alex Greenwald to perform Phantom Planet’s California, while Morgan Nagler and Farmer Dave Scher were also spotted taking part.
The playful spectacle felt in keeping with Lewis’s career-long refusal to separate sincerity from irony.
Emerging in the late 1990s as the frontwoman of Rilo Kiley, she helped define a generation of indie rock that prized emotional directness alongside sharp wit.
Rilo Kiley’s songs – often written from the perspective of young women negotiating desire, disappointment, and self-mythology – earned the band a devoted following before their hiatus in 2011.
Since then, Lewis has built an acclaimed solo career, releasing albums that blend classic Laurel Canyon pop, country-inflected melancholy, and confessional storytelling.
For an artist whose work has always challenged conventional narratives around romance and fulfilment, marrying her dog is perhaps less shocking than it sounds.
