Snow scuppering your plans this week? Wrap yourself up and enjoy these cosy films right now (Picture: REX)

Back to work and school week in 2026 has been thrown into chaos by snow across the UK.

Blankets of the white stuff and icy roads have made commuting and the school run impossible for many, making the first week of normality after the festive period a lot less, well, normal than usual.

But if you’re stuck inside while it’s sub-zero temperatures outside, you might be excited to use the unexpected work from home day as a chance to catch up with your watchlist – as if two weeks off for Christmas wasn’t enough time.

We won’t all be rushing outside to make snowmen and go sledging; many of us will be wrapping up with a blanket and scrolling through streaming services to combat the chill with something cosy.

If you’re stumped after weeks of Christmas films and classic reruns, we have seven cosy watches perfect for a snow day that you can watch right now in the UK.

Bridget Jones’s Diary

Where to watch: BBC iPlayer, NOW TV, and Sky

Few film franchises have the same feel-good vibes as Bridget Jones’s Diary, a series of films that many of us have grown up with and return to as a cosy hug.

The 2001 rom-com follows Renée Zellweger as the titular Bridget, a 32-year-old woman writing a diary of things she wishes would happen in her life.

While trying to navigate her chaotic life, she finds herself torn between two men – her unreliable boss, Daniel Cleaver (Hugh Grant), and her socially awkward new acquaintance, Mark Darcy (Colin Firth).

Groundhog Day

Where to watch: NOW TV and Sky

Not only is Groundhog Day packed full of snowy scenes to make you glad you’re indoors, but it’s also entirely set around the midpoint of winter.

Directed by Harold Ramis, the 1993 film follows cynical weatherman Phil Connors (Bill Murray), who goes to the town of Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania, to cover the annual Groundhog Day event.

While there, he finds himself stuck in a time loop, forcing him to look within and focus on self-improvement and becoming a kinder man to break the spell.

Edward Scissorhands

Where to watch: ITVX and Disney+

Often described as one of Tim Burton’s best films, nothing encapsulates the spirit of the festive period quite like Edward Scissorhands.

It tells the story of the titular creation (played by Johnny Depp), a man forged by a lonely inventor (Vincent Price) who passes away before he could complete his masterpiece, leaving him with scissors for hands.

When kindly Avon lady Peg Boggs (Dianne Wiest) calls on his dilapidated manor, she discovers Edward all alone, and takes him into her family home alongside husband, Bill (Alan Arkin), and her children Kim (Winona Ryder) and Kevin (Robert Oliveri).

Fargo

Where to watch: Netflix

The picturesque, snowy landscapes of this Oscar-winning masterpiece are second only to the twisty narrative that plays out onscreen.

Directed by the Coen Brothers, Fargo tells the story of Minnesota car salesman, Jerry Lundegaard (William H. Macy), who, desperate to raise money, hires criminals Carl Showalter (Steve Buscemi) and Gaear Grimsrud (Peter Stormare) to abduct his wife, Jean (Kristin Rudrud), and extort his wealthy father-in-law out of $80,000.

As the plan spirals dangerously out of control, pregnant police chief Marge Gunderson (Frances McDormand) begins investigating the disappearance, uncovering a web of corruption and lies.

Little Women

Where to watch: Channel Four, NOW TV, and Sky

While it’s freezing cold outside, Gillian Armstrong’s tear-jerking family drama Little Women is sure to warm your heart.

The coming-of-age film, based on Louisa May Alcott’s novels of the same name, follows the March sisters – Jo (Winona Ryder), Meg (Trini Alvarado), Beth (Claire Danes), and Amy (Samantha Mathis and Kirsten Dunst) – growing up in Civil War-era Massachusetts with their mother, Marmee (Susan Sarandon).

While their father serves in the war, the women navigate heartbreak, poverty, personal growth, and the challenges of womanhood.

The Thing

Where to watch: Available to rent and buy on Amazon Prime Video, Apple TV+, Arrow, Rakuten TV, and Sky

Okay, not everyone would describe 80s classic The Thing as cosy watching for a snow day, but as horror fans know, we can put a positive spin on basically any gory and spooky film.

John Carpenter’s terrifying sci-fi flick tells the story of a group of American researchers in Antarctica who come across an extraterrestrial life form that can infiltrate the bodies of other living organisms and imitate them to go undetected.

Paranoia runs rife through the group as they struggle to determine who is who they say they are, and whose body has been taken over by the vicious creature picking them off one by one.

Ice Age

Where to watch: Disney+

If the kids are off school today, what better film to sit them down to than 2002’s Ice Age?

Set during the days of the Pleistocene ice age, Chris Wedge’s animated hit follows woolly mammoth Manny (Ray Romano), sloth Sid (John Leguizamo), and smilodon Diego (Denis Leary), who come across a human baby and work together to return it to its tribe.

At the same time, a speechless squirrel, Scrat, is perpetually evaded by a delicious acorn that it is trying to acquire.
