Morrissey has cancelled his first scheduled concert of the year after suffering an ‘adverse reaction to a prescription medication’.
The English singer – full name Steven Patrick Morrissey – was the lead singer of the Smiths, who formed in 1982 before splitting five years later.
In the decades since then, he’s gone on to have a solo career that has included releasing 14 albums and being nominated for a Grammy and two Brit Awards.
However, at the same time, the singer has also regularly drawn the ire of fans after cancelling shows – last year pulling the plug on 22 of them, many last minute.
Although he’d been set to take to the stage in Rancho Mirage, California, on Saturday night – that also didn’t go ahead.
Instead, a statement released on his website a night before announced the show would be postponed due to an ‘adverse reaction to a prescription medication’.

‘Please hold onto your tickets as they will be honoured for a rescheduled date. Should you wish to request a refund, please contact your original point of purchase,’ it added.
Soon after another planned show – this time at the San Diego Theatre on January 6 – was also announced to be cancelled.
In a post shared on Instagram, the venue simply wrote: ‘Please note the Morrissey event scheduled for January 6 at the San Diego Civic Theatre has been cancelled. Refunds are available via point of purchase.’
It did not share whether the cancellation is due to the same medication issue.
Morrissey is due to play six more shows across the United States later this month, with others set to be held in Texas, Oklahoma, Missouri, Georgia and Florida, with those dates still scheduled to go ahead as planned.
Over the past 12 years Morrissey has cancelled over 120 shows.
Commenting on one of his recent Instagram posts, a loyal fan wrote: ‘Love you so much Moz but it’s ok also if you just retire now and enjoy the fruits of your career.’
However, others have been less forgiving, with one declaring last year that he ‘always does the same thing’.
In November he quietly scrapped an entire tour of South America, where he’d been due to play shows between November 8 and 22 in Buenos Aires, Sao Paulo, Santiago, and Lima.
The cancellation marked the third time in a row he’d scrapped shows in Mexico, with fans there left fuming.
‘You should return all of the money that your Mexican fans spent on travelling to see you. It’s sad that you have no understanding of the commitments people make to see you, more commitment than you make to performing for them,’ Kerri Anne commented on Instagram.
No reason for the cancellation was given, however it came two months after he backed out of two shows in the US after claiming there’s been a ‘credible threat on his life’.
In June shows in Scandinavia also didn’t go ahead, due to a ‘lack of financial support’ and being ‘travel-weary’. A month earlier Morrissey also cancelled two shows in Los Angeles after being hospitalised for a ‘severe sinusitis attack’.
In January he’d also pulled out of two shows in South Carolina, with his tour manager then revealing it was due to ‘physical exhaustion’.
Other shows in cities including Istanbul, Belgrade, Bucharest and Madrid also never went ahead.
He’s next scheduled to play in the UK at a show in London on February 28.
Despite fans being weary of now snapping up tickets to his shows, a few weeks ago Morrissey delighted some after teasing a new album.
Posting a what appeared to be a track listing for a new album on Christmas Day alongside the logo for Sire Records, the 12-track list included titles such as The Monsters of Pig Alley, Headache and You’re Right It’s Time.
